HUNTLY MAURY

Born in Hammersmith, London in March 1955, Maury started early in life mastering drawing and painting techniques, firstly learning oils then acrylics His fond interest in painting transportation subjects from aircraft, trains and road vehicles earned him high respect from family and friends when he was only eight years old. He learn’t a great deal from his father, Master Mariner Richard Maury who spent many hours drawing Tall Ships, Sailing Schooners and Merchant Marine Ships for book illustrations when he was not on duty on a wartime Victory ship. Maury’s first finished oil painting for the West Coast was presented to the Children’s Hospital in Oakland, California in 1968, long before he arrived to set up residence in that state.  Art was to become his passion. He would regularly display his artwork in local art shows in the UK and in his later adopted home, California. He has won many honorary awards in the past. It was only because his rental agreement declining the use of Oils and Acrylic paints where he resided in Petaluma, California in 1980 that he took up learning the techniques of watercolours as a challenge in which he succeeded well. Today, he only works in this media and finds the challenge of not messing up too royally to be the ultimate reward . Other than painting as a self trained artist, he loves travel, sailing, rowing and reading. He currently lives in Marin County, California.
